Why is an Early Morning Routine the Key to Your Success?
What do Michelle Obama, Richard Branson and Steve Jobs all have in common?
They’re known for being early risers!
Not because they love a good sunrise (although who doesn’t), it’s because they understand the benefits of waking up early.
So why is having an early morning routine so important?
You have time to exercise
Not surprisingly this is one of my personal favourites. Studies show that you’re much more likely to stick to your fitness routine if you workout in the morning, mainly because that’s when your willpower is at its strongest.
Whether it's going to the gym or working out at home, exercising in the evening leaves too much opportunity for life to get in the way. Evening workouts often get skipped because you have to work late, you're exhausted after a long day or the kids just won’t go to bed!
The other added benefit of getting your workout in early is that exercising actually boosts your energy and reduces fatigue so should you find yourself feel more energised for the rest of the day.
You're more likely to make healthy food decisions
Waking later, usually means you're rushing in the morning - to get to work or the kids to school. This can lead to grabbing a quick easy to eat breakfast, which aren’t usually the most healthy options or skipping breakfast altogether. This can affect your blood sugar levels which leads to making bad food choices for the rest of the day because you’re craving energy. Getting up early gives you the time to make and eat the breakfast you want, whatever that is.
You’re more productive
Believe it or not your brain is most alert and creative in the morning! It's the best time to brainstorm, make decisions and plan your day. People find that goals set in the morning are much more likely to be achieved.
Early risers also find that by the time they get to work they’re awake and ready to go.
You get better quality sleep
It sounds like this shouldn’t be the case but it’s true! If you get up earlier, you’ll fall asleep earlier and more easily at night. This increases your likelihood of going through all four stages of the sleep cycle, so you wake up the next morning feeling rested and full of energy.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg, I could talk to you for hours about the many, many benefits of getting up early.
Shhhhh…. do not disturb
But for me the reason I love my early morning routine is creating time for myself to spend doing the things that make me happy. Life is so jam-packed and we often end up putting ourselves last. My mornings are a guilt-free time for me, whether that’s working out, working on a passion project or just sitting in the garden having a cup of tea in peace and quiet. I literally wouldn't miss it for the world.
No rush, no stress …. and by the time my family wakes up I’m ready to be Mummy, James’ wife and your insta-friend.
